A California Health Plan's In-House Print Shop Chooses FlexTG Over Nine Vendors and Grows Mail Merge Capacity to 10 Million

A California health plan runs its own in-house print shop. The shop produced its color and black-and-white work on four Ricoh production presses: two Pro C7100S color units and two Pro 8100S black-and-white units. It also sends out HIPAA-compliant mail every day, with reporting.
Service Had Fallen Short
Service from the shop’s previous providers fell short, and the sales reps the team relied on had retired. The team wanted one partner who could support both its production presses and its office printers.
Banners were printed on a wide-format printer, and covers were then cut down on a guillotine. One press already had a banner sheet tray, but it had never been turned on.
Earning the Business Through a Competitive RFQ
FlexTG’s production print team walked the shop floor with the print shop manager and the facilities supervisor, mapping how jobs come in and how each press needs to be set up. The team asked for proof, so FlexTG printed samples to show the new presses could run its 13″ x 19″ banner sheets.
When the plan issued its RFQ, FlexTG completed the onsite walkthrough, sent a detailed response and worked with the plan’s contracts team to meet every contract term. FlexTG won against nine other vendors and replaced the plan’s four production presses. The new equipment includes:

- Quadient DS-1200 folder inserter with Impress software, iX-7 mailing system, MACH 6 printer and BulkMailer software
- Duplo HC-680i 26.8″ programmable hydraulic paper cutter

Before install, FlexTG held kickoff calls and walkthroughs, scheduled training and installation, and set clear expectations with the team.
Today the print shop runs six Ricoh presses with banner sheets up to 27.5″ and perfect binding, and its DS-1200 with Impress software runs mail merge every day. Mail merge capacity grew from 1,000,000 to 10,000,000 in one year.
